CIL fails to meet production target by 17 million tonne in FY2013-14

Coal India Ltd chairman and managing director S Narsing Rao has said that the company could end the financial year with a production shortfall of around 17 million tonne (MT). The fall in coal offtake for power production and the unwillingness of state electricity boards to buy enough power has led to lower demand for coal thereby affecting the production targets.

CIL production increases by 10.5% in Q2

In the last July-September quarter, Coal India (CIL) has achieved a 10.5 per cent growth in production to 98.5 million tonne against the same period last year. Supplies to consumer or offtake grew by 7.5 per cent to 109 mt. CIL reported 0.4 per cent growth in production and two per cent growth in offtake during April-June 2013.

Even as Coal India (CIL) registered growth in production and offtake during April and May 2013 from the corresponding period of the previous year, it failed to attain the target on these fronts. For example, while the company aimed to produce 71.65 million tonne (mn t) of coal in April and May, it could manage only 70.30 mn t. Similarly, it missed its offtake target for April-May as it sold 78.16 mn t of the fuel against the target of 80.95 mn t.

CIL may exceed output target in FY14

A leading media quoted Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal as saying that the state-run miner Coal India (CIL) may exceed the output target of 482 million tonne (mn t) in 2013-14.
